Making Custom OpenVZ Template

Hey guys, I was wondering if it’s possible to reset some of the passwords in programs I’ve installed on a fresh template. Like for example; I have a clean CentOS 5 installation, and I installed nGinx, GNOME w/ VNC-server, mySQL, and phpMyAdmin; is there a way to clean out the passwords so it can be set by SolusVM when someone uses the template to install onto their VPS?

Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks a lot.

You must need to make custom template with the passwords for nGinx, GNOME w/ VNC-server, mySQL, and phpMyAdmin. Then you add the logins for these softwares in Description field when you add the template.

So your customer’s would be view the logins when they try to install.

Since SolusVM will set the root password, serial console password’s only it doesn’t set 3rd party software related logins.

How to install OpenVPN on Ubuntu VPS

Came across this tutorial on installing OpenVPN on Ubuntu VPS. The tutorial is graphical and every step is explained with actual images. Hope it will benefit the community.

http://tipupdate.com/how-to-install-…on-ubuntu-vps/

Thank you for the tutorial just what I was looking for.

thanks a lot for sharing, really helpful article…..

thanks
this is great
I tried before to install OpenVz with ubuntu but it’s not success

I will try again with this method

I want also the way to install OpenVZ on Fedora 16
is this posible !!

ohh so sorry !!

this is openvpn not openvz

Hi,

This is the hardest way of installing the OpenVPN.

Well you download the .RPM Package from OpenVPN (http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-…vpn-as-sw.html) into your VPS or Dedicated

Then you run this commands

http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-…-software.html

And the software will be installed it self.

Also you need to do this

http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-…container.html

Tweaks so the VPN can work.

And you will have a Admin and User Interface for your VPN.

You will go like yourip:933 and you will just need to configure it and you are done …

@sandy92

This appears to be an easier method. I will try this method as well . Thanks for letting me know this. It appears that this is a paid implementation of OpenVPN whereas the method in the tutorial link i posted is free i guess.

Hi mana333,

Well you will have 2 Users Access at the same time for Free if you want more users then you need to pay but this method is more easy.

@ Sandy92 . I have tried your method successfully and it is very smooth and fast and easy. Thanks for sharing this.

Used this exact guide…very helpful and got it working on Ubuntu 11.04 VPS!

How to rsync?

I am planning to get a cheap vps as a backup vps.. I have read that doing rsync would be the best method…

How do you do it?

Quote: I am planning to get a cheap vps as a backup vps.. I have read that doing rsync would be the best method…

How do you do it?This depends on the contents you need to backup. Use "man rsync" to understand the options. You can then configure the backups accordingly.

Google rsnapshot once you feel comfortable using rsync and it’s various cmd line options

Yes, probably rsync is the simplest way to do that.

Quote: Google rsnapshot once you feel comfortable using rsync and it’s various cmd line optionsI usually suggest using Rdiff-backup instead. Rsnapshot uses an inefficient method of creating the snapshot, which takes up extra time, puts a lot of load on the storage system, and complicates filesystem maintenance.

Cherokee problems

Folks, I am a new user of Cherokee – started using it only yesterday – so please be gentle and guide me. I have setup one site – bmcnoida.org and it is running fine.

Here is my query for another site.

1. the domain samartha.info is a drupal site so I can set up the rules for that. OK.

However samartha.info/techblogs/ is a wordpress site.

How do I make Cherokee write the rules for WordPress when techblogs is accessed.

I want to migrate that site to cherokee.

Please guide me step by step.

2. Also: I want to create a new subdomain called photos.bmcnoida.org and make it serve from the /photos directory.

Any one who accesses bmcnoida.org/photos should automatically be redirected to photos.bmcnoida.org.
How do I do this?

Please guide me step by step.

3. Accessing bmcnoida.org/photos gives me a page not found.

However, bmcnoida.org/photos/index.php works.

How do I resolve this in Cherokee?

So far, I am enjoying Cherokee. Well done devs.

Thanks.

God bless you all.

Michael

Folks, any one knows how to make these work?

How to Install rTorrent/ruTorrent on Debian/Ubuntu VPS

This tutorial will guide you through the setup of a fully-featured seedbox running on a Debian or Ubuntu system, including:

  • libtorrent 0.13.0
  • rTorrent 0.9
  • ruTorrent Web UI (3.0)

This guide has been tested with Debian 6 (x86_64) and Ubuntu 11.04 (x86_64).

To start, access your VPS via SSH (as the root user) and do the following to update your platform and install some required dependencies:

# apt-get update
# apt-get install subversion build-essential automake libtool libcppunit-dev libcurl3-dev libsigc++-2.0-dev unzip unrar-free curl libncurses-dev
# apt-get install apache2 php5 php5-cli php5-curl

Enable scgi for Apache:

# apt-get install libapache2-mod-scgi
# ln -s /etc/apache2/mods-available/scgi.load /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/scgi.load

Install XMLRPC:

# mkdir /install;cd /install
# svn checkout http://xmlrpc-c.svn.sourceforge.net/…mlrpc-c/stable xmlrpc-c
# cd xmlrpc-c
# ./configure –disable-cplusplus
# make
# make install

Intall libtorrent:

# cd /install
# wget http://vps6.net/src/libtorrent-0.13.0.tar.gz
# tar xvf libtorrent-0.13.0.tar.gz
# cd libtorrent-0.13.0
# ./autogen.sh
# ./configure
# make
# make install

Install rTorrent:

# cd /install
# wget http://vps6.net/src/rtorrent-0.9.0.tar.gz
# cd rtorrent-0.9.0
# ./autogen.sh
# ./configure –with-xmlrpc-c
# make
# make install
# ldconfig

Create required directories:

# mkdir /home/seeder1/rtorrent
# mkdir /home/seeder1/rtorrent/.session
# mkdir /home/seeder1/rtorrent/watch
# mkdir /home/seeder1/rtorrent/download

Setup .rtorrent.rc file (rTorrent config):

# cd ~/
# wget http://vps6.net/src/.rtorrent.rc
# cp .rtorrent.rc /home/seeder1/

(Edit the settings in .rtorrent.rc, like max upload/download speed, max connected peers, etc, as needed.)

Install rTorrent:

# cd /install
# wget http://vps6.net/src/rutorrent-3.0.tar.gz
# tar xvf rutorrent-3.0.tar.gz
# mv rutorrent /var/www
# wget http://vps6.net/src/plugins-3.0.tar.gz
# tar xvf plugins-3.0.tar.gz
# mv plugins /var/www/rutorrent
# rm -rf /var/www/rutorrent/plugins/darkpal
# chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/rutorrent

Secure /rutorrent:

# a2enmod ssl
# a2enmod auth_digest
# a2enmod scgi
# openssl req $@ -new -x509 -days 365 -nodes -out /etc/apache2/apache.pem -keyout /etc/apache2/apache.pem
# chmod 600 /etc/apache2/apache.pem
# htdigest -c /etc/apache2/passwords seedbox seeder1

(Enter a password of your choice when prompted, you will use this to log in to the ruTorrent web UI.)

# cd /etc/apache2/sites-available/
# rm -rf default
# wget http://vps6.net/src/default
# a2ensite default-ssl
# /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

Install screen:

# apt-get install screen

Start rTorrent in a detached shell using screen:

# screen -fa -d -m rtorrent

(To start rtorrent automatically when the VPS is booted, add the above command to /etc/rc.local)

You can now access ruTorrent at http://xx.xx.xx.xx/rutorrent/ (replace xx.xx with your server’s IP address). You should be greeted with a login prompt, where the username is "seeder1" and the password is the one you set above in the "secure /rutorrent" section.

great guide buddy

Nice tutorial, Thanks

An excellent cookbook. That’s the way I like my tutorials – I only have to read what I’m actually going to do and dispense with any lengthy explanations, since I can tweak what I want to along the way.

For those looking for a more simple install for occasional torrent downloading or seeding, I’d look into "transmission-daemon". It provides a web interface and you only need to install 1 package.

How to and recommendation on setup vps server?

Hello,

Just wondering maybe some vps provider here can share their knowledge how to or maybe some recommendation to setup a vps server.
I mean for example :
1. what kind of CPU is the best (XEON 3400 series, 5500 series, or maybe AMD series)
2. how much minimum RAM
3. any recomendation on host OS (for OpenVZ and or XEN PV / HVM and or KVM)
4. any recomendation on hard disk type / RAID setup?
5. any recomendation which virtualization to be choosed by it’s pros and cons.

Above all of the configuration maybe any recomendation on wellknown branded server series (IBM / HP / DELL / etc…)..
Thanks all…

Hey, it all depends on how many VPS’s you want to put on your host. I myself would recommend Dell hardware as it has excellent reliability. You will need to work out by how many VPS’s you want to host, what resources you need to allocate to the server.

As for raid, RAID 10 is the best for performance.

I use Xen for virtualisation but have not ventured into KVM yet, so I cannot comment which is better.

Centmin Mod – Nginx / MariaDB auto installer

Centmin Mod is a modified version of BTCentral’s original Centmin Project (WHT thread).

Started it’s own thread separate from original Centmin thread, as some end users are confusing the two versions.

What is Centmin Mod ?

I started modifying Ben’s awesome original Centmin script for my own needs specifically for vBulletin/wordpress usage with MariaDB MySQL performance fork alternative to MySQL community release versions and slowly it grew to what it is now, Centmin Mod project with a full on shell menu based installer. You can see it in action on live site Centminmod.com which runs on 5x LEB CentOS 6.0 32bit OpenVZ VPSes.

It auto installs Nginx web server with log rotation along with various software: PHP-FPM with log rotation, better performing MySQL fork, MariaDB 5.2.x MySQL server, Memcached v1.4.10, Memcache v3.0.5, choice of PHP opcode cachers like Xcache v1.3.2 and APC Cache v3.1.9, CSF Firewall, Siege benchmark as well as CentOS updated version of Python v2.7.2. Also included is a custom ioping.sh disk i/o benchmark script which is a wrapper script to use ioping to test disk’s random and sequential disk speeds.

Tips:

  1. SSH2 Telnet client tip
If your SSH2 Telnet client options allow for it you can increase the size of your scroll back buffer size to allow larger amounts of outputted text to be shown via scrolling back and forth. This is the option in VanDyke SecureCRT SSH2 telnet client I use. I set my scrollback buffer to maximum size of 128,000 lines.
  2. Centmin Mod upgrade tip
If you are upgrading a server which already previously had Centmin Mod installed, you DO NOT need to run option #1, instead run option #4 and then option #5 for upgrading Nginx web server and upgrading PHP.
  3. Centmin Mod FAQ
  4. Best to first test install on a local CentOS server i.e. install VMWARE, VirtualBOX etc to create a test server if you can to get a feel for the script.

PHP upgrade is failing for me – not sure if this is a non-mod problem

Any plans to add subversion installation to the script?

I see there is another Nginx installer here that supports more software installs – http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1117043

Might be nice to add a few of those to yours?

Could you run a low traffic wordpress installation with this script on half a meg of RAM?

Thanks for posting this – you rock!

Hello everyone! I just installed centmin mod in my vmware and it was successful. I am a newbie here and I want to learn more about nginx.
Since there’s no control panel here like cPanel or Plesk(which I was used to), I am wondering how to setup/add/edit ftp accounts for domains(vhosts) added?
And also, what is the default username/password for memcache.php?

Thank you and I am very much excited to play with this and eventually use it in my existing website. My site is currently running nginx as proxy + apache2 + Plesk and I want to get rid of Plesk because it costs so much.

I also forgot to ask. I know this sounds crazy but I really need to use like .htaccess in apache (because of the software I bought). I have successfuly converted the htaccess properly for nginx using this tool: http://www.anilcetin.com/convert-apa…cess-to-nginx/

Now what’s next? Will still use .htaccess file but with nginx rewrite rule inside? or does nginx uses different filename for htaccess? Sorry for this newbie questions. I’vee been searching the net for weeks to successfully migrate to nginx.

Quote: Could you run a low traffic wordpress installation with this script on half a meg of RAM?

Thanks for posting this – you rock! You could but depends on traffic and database concurrency load levels and you may need to further tune nginx, php-fpm and mariadb mysql settings based on those concurrency load levels.

You can change in in the memcache.php file itself though.

As to learning about nginx 2 best sources on the internet are

Adding vhosts http://centminmod.com/faq.html#setupvhostdns as to ftp, you’ll have to add that yourself. Google.com is your friend or ask on this forum.

Quote: I also forgot to ask. I know this sounds crazy but I really need to use like .htaccess in apache (because of the software I bought). I have successfuly converted the htaccess properly for nginx using this tool: http://www.anilcetin.com/convert-apa…cess-to-nginx/

I’vee been searching the net for weeks to successfully migrate to nginx. No nginx doesn’t support htaccess so accessing .htaccess won’t work, so you need nginx’s own rewrite rule format/syntax to be added to virtual host record for your nginx added vhost. can this script be used just for installing optional components like only pigz, xcache etc ?

menu option #8 and #17 but it’s for centmin mod based installs only NOT any other nginx setups done with other scripts

vps statistics

hi

want to create php with vps server statistics where include the actual situation of ram, bandwidth etc.. or simply monitoring.

is there any script or tutorial for that/?

What control panel does your vps use?

- Ashton

most of them are using solusvm

Cant you pull the graphs from SolusVM, Whmcs does this.

- Ashton

I use something like Nagios which is a server monitoring software. It gives me all the graphs and statistical information and ensures our servers are healthy.
Much recommended.
http://www.nagios.org/

Thank you sir

Quote: Thank you sirI did forget to mention that we use it to monitor our dedicated servers but I’m sure it can still be applied to VPSs. A lot of networking professionals perfer this software so it’s certainly professional grade for internal usage. I’m not sure how it would work if you wanted your customers to see their stats, they might have to use SolusVm for that. Hope this helps and good luck!

we have coded to monitor our customer bandwidth usage and apply it into php page but our problem to monitor the actual performance every vps we got and put it in web page. we prefer less memory usage but effective.

Hope this helps and good luck!how much memory does it consumed if we install that monitoring software?

Am using this. Call it uptime.php and upload it on ur site. then open domain.com/uptime.php Hope it helps
